Release GOG Galaxy 2.0 for Linux

matj1 The wish to release GOG Galaxy on Linux is one of the most voted wishes. Now the developers probably focus more on Galaxy 2.0 so it's more likely that Galaxy 2.0 will be released on Linux than the original Galaxy.

hschoepel I think here are some misunderstandings here but i think i was a bit to haughty...I never said that I'm against native Software clients but for that you need experienced developer and resources. It seems that players here are thinking that on other portals like Steam etc. are so many native games is often not true !
As a developer i 'try' to write my text in easy words so it can be understand by hopefully everyone.
Usually the application called 'Wine' is used to allow Windows games to be played on another platform like OSX, Linux...It is a translation tool and acts like 'Google translator'.
Easy example: Windows counts 1+1 = 2 but Linux doesn't understand this routine as it only can divide and so it uses the Wine app to come up to the same result and counts 3-1 = 2.
Steam is using a software called 'Proton' developed by Valve. It uses the Original Wine app but forked it long time ago. Valve developed features ( DXVK, Esync...) which improves the game experience and helps to handle difficult topics like Windows DirectX, .Net or Sound APIs. With this technology you are able to run the game on a different platform, well there is often much more work needed to get it running in the end.
There are very few companies out who signes contracts with a game studio and re-write their source code of the game itself to get it running without any fancy extra software. Such companies are for example Feral Interactive or back in the days Loki Games.
A game studio need to think about it if they really want to port it to another platform because of very important reason.
1. You need experienced developer who know how the operating systems are working as they create the " base construct".
2. You need experienced QA Team who know how to find problems.
3. You need extra customer support for a Linux platform if you don't have already employees who are familiar with this.
4. Nearly every time you release a new game patch, addon or whatever it needs to be tested again if it's still working on all platforms.
Keep in mind that there are so many different Linux distributions out which are not 100% acting same. That's the reason most of the companies are checking the market share and focusing on Ubuntu.

in the end it's all about money ! The Linux market share is 1-2% and even Apple ones is higher. Most profit market are nowadays game consoles and closely followed by Windows.
GOG is a small company and if they have enough resources or want to spend money to outsource such tasks...I guess they analyze the market and then will think about it more deeply internally.

Bernstein83 +1 it's really just a missed opportunity. Having to use 3rd party apps under Linux to access Galaxy just weakens it's security. Galaxy just queries your database for everything, it should be the perfect example of a web app. What happened?
@hschoepel so you're against a Linux client? I mean you just come on here, bash Linux users and don't even comment on the topic at hand. Correction, you seem satisfied with Galaxy as it is so why are you on here? Most of us already know about Lutris and other options, we still want a Linux client.
BTW most Linux users that far into how cool the base system is have a healthy dislike for 3rd party tools that enable proprietary software.
@Siphonight I use Debian based systems almost exclusively but I was impressed with Fedora on my VM. Too bad I'm resistant to learning new command lines but it does have me questioning my choices.

Long time Linux user here, and your comments are a little bit of not so nice nonsense.
If Linux users like you keep on insulting newcomers then it's not so surprising that the grows of our OS took so long to be were it's now.
Not everyone here is a wannabe poweruser who likes to take 3/4 of his time diving into a terminal window. If a system is unable to catch new users and be intuitive and user friendly, then it will slowly die.
And I'm not talking about the fact that Ubuntu and CentOS did far more for the whole Linux community than Debian ever did, There are flaws like everywhere, but we must do things together as a community and accept new users and their ideas. I'm sure that everyone here doesn't even know what a package manager is, but that is fine as long as we're not condescending and explain it properly.
Judaspriester88 I would really like to see this happen. In general, I prefere GOG over Steam, because I want to buy the Games, not just an using right. But the great linux support on Steam really makes me struggle, after I said good bye to Windows.
@hschoepel I don't really get your point. not everyone that uses linux is really deep into it, some of them just want to get rid of M$, which bcomes (at least for me) worse and worse.
Besides that, GOG Galaxy also offers some comfort features I would like to have again like Autoupdates for games that are still in development.
hschoepel What is the problem here for ya ladies ?!?! If your a Linux Noob you just use Lutris and installer Script. Everyone else ( like me ) just use wine cli and install the binary in seconds !
It's hilarious how many wannabe 'Linux User' have no clue how to use a OS and a simple app....I'm Debian user ( the real deal and not Ubuntu shit ! ) since 1999 and compare to early days its nowadays so easy...
Ladies just stop complaining ! Read a code book and just create fat binary with AppImage, Flat or Zero SDK etc. if you really want it kids like...

zephar123 One of reasons I buy games on Steam instead of GOG. I would rather support GOG, but Galaxy is a must.
bbuske Nativ Linux client is a must. GOG is great and especially old games (which was the initial purpose of GOG and still is I guess) run much better on Linux than on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Steam shows how to do it.. having GOG Galaxy on Linux will be a big thing.

I like GoG, but unfortunately, if you don't support my system I will have to stop buying games from GoG and be forced to buy from steam.
I will not make the same mistake again as I did with phantom liberty.
bajaspearfishing Yes please. GOG Galaxy + Proton for Linux. I don't even care about the community features as much as I just want to be able to view/launch/buy games with my controller on my pc attached to the TV and not need a mouse and keyboard like I can do with Steam's big picture mode.
Lowkey511 Please add Official support for Linux, or at least add a way to redeem rewards on Linux for games requiring the GOG Galaxy launcher for reward unlocks. I had preordered Phantom liberty and while I can play it on Linux I can not access my in game rewards on Linux.

I was okay with them not supporting Linux in the initial run.
I understand it made sense to support the platform with the most users first. But its been how long now? What is going on? This software can´t be that complex. I am using a GNOME game launcher to install and launch GOG games now. I've even thought about linking the games to Steam. Is it SOO hard to give us a digital community and launcher for our games?
Honestly, I much prefer DRM-free, but Steam gives us more community options than GOG. It's time to port to Linux GOG!

Kaptain_Krawdad I agree. I'm abandoning Windows as Steam/gaming were the only reasons I used it. Since Steam is dropping support for Windows 7 (The best thing Mike Rowe Soft made since Win2K Pro), I'm disinclined to continue shelling out my hard earned cash to either M$ or $team. Make this happen and I'll fill your coffers this Christmas.

Luv4Cheese Since Microsoft Windows 10, hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people have turned to Linux for PC gaming. I honestly think this trend is only going to grow exponentially. People are tired of Microsoft's spyware. Most, if not all people here would agree that if GOG offered more Linux compatible games we would transfer our Steam libraries over here. The PC community HATES DRM! You literally have money sitting on the table.
ToytonSan Hello, I very very very much would love to have the native Linux launcher of GOG on my Steam Deck. I spent years building up my collection in your shop and love your approach to the games world. I would ALWAYS give priority to your shop but I noticed that Heroic Launcher just makes things too fragile and neither I have proper Cloud Saves etc.. I guess you know the problems.. It would be amazing to just have access to my whole GOG library on the Deck.. Thanks for hearing us out ..

Revan829 i switched to Linux in the last year and i am more willing to buy games via GOG than epic games. I already use Steam but i absolute HATE the DRM (not for piracy purposes at all). I love GOG a lot more and would happily use it 99% of the time. 1% Steam because sometimes i have to.
